Cattleya aurantiaca

Synonyms: Epidendrum aurantiacum, Epidendrum aureum

Common name: Orange Cattleya

Plant: epiphytic, to 55cm, forming large clumps with fusiform pseudobulbs (to 33cm) and two ovate/oblong-elliptic leaves near the apex.

Flowers: inflorescence with few to many orange/orange-yellow 3-4cm flowers, sepals and petals linear-elliptic with a broad ovate lip. Some varieties have an intense orange color approaching the color red. Occasional the flowers have brownish/purplish spotting on the lip.

Bloom times: summer and fall

Comments: There is a link between the genera Cattleya and Epidendrum. Cattleyas are widely used in hybridizing for the intense orange color.

Distribution Range: Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras
